On July 12th 16 Frenkel employees had the great opportunity to participate in the 18th Annual IICF Softball Tournament and event that has raised over $500,000 dollars. We arrived at Central Park with smiles on our faces and gloves in hand; ready to embrace the hot temperatures and play for a great cause. This years tournament raises funds for students who are members of Horizons at Sacred Heart University. “Horizons” is a summer program that provides participating students with the resources they need to become successful and well-rounded individuals. Their summer program consists of hands-on instruction in literacy, math, art and physical education. The supplemental education that “Horizons” provides to their students is life-changing and allows their dreams of attending college to become attainable.

Press Release:
Horizons at Sacred Heart University (SHU) enables participating children to develop the skills and confidence to grow and become successful, contributing members of society in the city of Bridgeport, CT and beyond.

SHU is a coeducational, independent, comprehensive institution of higher learning in the Catholic intellectual tradition whose primary objective is to prepare men and women to live in and make their contributions in the community. We assist in the development of individuals who are knowledgeable of self, rooted in faith, educated in mind, compassionate in heart, responsive to social and civic obligations, and able to respond to an ever-changing world.

In 2018, Horizons will need to grow capacity to support an incoming rising kindergarten/first grade class of 17 students.

The Horizons SHU program is an evidence-based model initiative that aims to combat summer learning loss and close the achievement and opportunity gaps facing children from low-income families in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Now entering its sixth program year, 17 rising kindergarten/first grade students will be added to the existing group of 102, for a total of 119 students. Next year in grant year 2018, we anticipate adding another incoming kindergarten (rising first grade class).

Horizons at SHU develops highly educated and talented young people who will become positive contributing citizens of society. The Horizons at SHU program includes:

  • rigorous, hands-on instruction in literacy and math;
  • a high-quality arts program;
  • a strong physical education program; and
  • robust swimming instruction.

The goal of Horizons at SHU is that 100% of participating children will attend college.
